is a neurologist at the University Medical Center Utrecht. He did his medical training in Groningen and received a PhD in 1995 (‘The immune response to glycoconjugates in peripheral neuropathy’) in Utrecht on immune-mediated neuropathies. From 1988 to 1991 he was a Research Fellow at the Neurological Institute of Columbia University in New York (Neuroimmunology Laboratory Prof N Latov). In 2005 he was appointed Professor of Neurology at the UMC Utrecht. He is director of the Laboratory for Neuromuscular Disease at the UMC Utrecht, and of the Netherlands ALS Center which is a collaboration between the UMC Utrecht, AMC Amsterdam and UMC St Radboud to improve scientific research as well as treatment and care of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other motor neuron diseases in The Netherlands. His research line has been focused on clinical and basic mostly patient-oriented research on immunological and degenerative disorders of motor neurons such as multifocal motor neuropathy, spinal muscular atrophy and ALS.
